Song Title: “Scenery” 《风景》
Artist: Shii
Album: "Eve of the Party" 《聚会的前夜》
Release Date: April 23, 2020
"Sad heart, the fragmented nature of life, the organic self can never be conquered."
Shii is an indie electronic musician from Chengdu, now living in Wuhan. She graduated from college with a Chinese major, which accounts for the poetic and humanistic elements of her work. In 2019, Shii signed a contract with the label Beautiful Records.
Shii's song “Scenery" was written during this on-going time of self-isolation. Her song is on the compilation album "Eve of the Party." Each song in the album represents the urban youth of China. In a previous playlist article, we covered West By West’s song “Desperate Invitation” off of the same compilation album.
“I recorded [“Scenery”] by myself at home, because I want to show how I can accidentally feel a moment of nature despite being in the city. The song’s initial form was relatively fragmented while also containing a heart-warming part with a strong rhythm. During the pandemic, I actually changed it to a song called "Sensing Pain… All of the lyrics came to my ears one by one, with each word full of hope and warmness in the melody.”
Using her unique female perspective and voice, Shii injects fun and “heat'' into icy electronic music. Her music combines Intelligent Dance Music (IDM), Glitch, and Dream-Pop into a melody full of flowing beauty.
“Later, I intended to share [“Scenery”] for the playlist released in the spring of 2020 (MusicDish releases indie music playlists featured on our WeChat), but I was not satisfied with the first version of the song. Therefore I created a second version of the song, "Bathroom"《浴室》 that features slight sadness. I even thought about the music video using DIY shots in the bathroom that show the composition and sublimation of a boring day…”
“Finally, I gave up "Bathroom" and wanted to write a more hopeful melody, because I felt that I haven’t done that for a long time and it is more meaningful.”
She enjoys putting her music to dance, performance, and other visual mediums. With this, Shii pushes the boundaries of what a musical sensory experience can mean.
