West By West’s imagination and various vocal stylings have been shaped by exposure to many different musical aesthetics over the years. Her artist name takes inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock’s film North by Northwest.
"Desperate Invitation" is the first single off of West By West's new album, "Eve of the Party.” Each song in the album represents some aspect of urban youth culture. She describes how the song:
“...comes from the bottom of my heart and is like a silently spoken secret in the air.”
West By West begins the track by layering various synths, power chords on guitar, and siren-like pitches. This futuristic, industrial energy accents the entrance of her airy vocals after a minute and thirty seconds of build-up. She oscillates between whisper-like vocals and powerful belting to accentuate the energy of a given section.
“The words "Desperate Invitation" (in Chinese) appear everywhere around the world of food, clothing, and shelter. Every time you go to a public place, you can find these words. The phrase swiftly became the most common greeting in life, and now it’s written into my song and echoes in your ears.”
Creating music and designing performances allows the audience to experience a concrete reflection of her psyche. Through this ephemeral avenue of music-making, she bypasses the confines of “physical” performance and can create the style she truly wants to.
Instinctively, songwriters often capture their attitudes and worldview in each lyric and note they create. By sharing their songs, musicians have the opportunity to connect the public to their message.
“Although you may have been rejected countless times or felt left out, the door in your heart is always open for a special something, whether it is a person or a thing or any mood.”
She's also releasing a new album in July so you may also look forward to the new album! West By West’s songs bring to light the complex emotions involved with discovering the hidden person behind her own music.
