Who are we? It seems like such an easy question, but there is not a single answer to it. We can be men, women, sons, daughters, fathers, mothers…
We all carry multiple identities, but at the end of the day, who are we without all the labels?
We try hard to figure out who we are. However, we often get lost. We sometimes get trapped by the glamorous materialistic life and couldn’t see what’s going on underneath. However, with the advancement of the industrial revolution and civilization, our moral standards, personalities, and freedom appear to be regressing. Thus, it pushes us to rethink life and everything: Is society as a whole actually evolving or moving backward?
This is what the song “Who Are We” is about -- a deep chain of thought on life itself and who we as people are, via the format of music. It’s rather philosophic, but singer, Wang Weima, states it calmly through the music’s flow. From the composer’s perspective, the most creative part of the song is the conversation between the monologue at the beginning and a big chunk of solo guitar playing in the end.
Wang Weima is a duo named after the lead singer and guitarist, along with his brother, Wang Tianyi, who is the percussionist and the backup singer. The duo was formed in 2008 at Dolon Nor, a town in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Wang Weima uses their music to talk about the simplest things in life and their hometown experience in Inner Mongolia. They published their first record, “The Songs of Horses,” in 2015. “Who Are We” is from their new album “800 Miles of Dream,” which just came out in July 2020.
