Song Title: “The Last Feast of Mirage” 《海市蜃楼最后的盛宴》
Artist: The Peppercorns 《飞椒》
Album: "Upstream the Echo" 《洄响集》
Release Date: May 21, 2020
In early 2016, The Peppercorns were founded in Beijing. Currently, they're the only art rock band in the entire country. Influenced by progressive rock and art rock from the 1960s and 1970s, their music style has a willful and extravagant nature that emulates the refinement of a classical art sculpture.
If you like Pink Floyd and King Crimson, the classic avant-garde rock bands of the 1960s and 70s, you might be surprised by their album!
"Upstream the Echo" is their first concept album since their establishment and is a summary of their music so far.
"The inspiration for "The Last Feast of Mirage" came from a 17-year celebration. At that time, I was obsessed with all kinds of retro recording equipment. I took a tape recorder with me to take samples from everything. "
"After listening to those recordings, a year later, I discovered that the people since then have experienced many changes and were dividing up personal belongings. In fact, at that time, we had a hunch that everything was about to be lost. However, this tape recording later appeared in the prelude of the song. I slightly embellished my friend, Angie’s quote, "nothing is forever" as well."
The recently released song is divided into four chapters. The first part starts with an extravagant party and the second part describes the story of Echo and Narcissist, discussing love and loss.
The third part "Remembering a non-existent person in a dream" is about a dream where upon waking, one finds that there was no such experience, despite it feeling so real. It is also the “echo” of the first chapter. The theme of the fourth chapter is reconciliation, "Everything I loved will wake up in the wind", which naturally leads to the last song "Falling Leaves" 《落叶》 on the album.
