Liu Ximeng, Guo Weilun, and Jian Dan are members of an indie rock band called Young Drug. In 2016, the group was established in Qinzhou and is currently based in Guangxi, China. By incorporating elements of disco, post-punk, and other musical forms into their indie rock sound, they embody a simple and retro style.
“The pandemic did not postpone releasing our new EP "Superstar" on online platforms but has affected our schedule for touring this year. Originally, we planned on having a mini-tour, a small exhibition, and then concentrate on recording the album, followed by a national tour. In the end, I could only “tour” in my bedroom and had the chance to write a new song.”
Young Drug’s music couples catchy guitar riffs with their vocalist’s unique and “magnetic” sound. In 2019, the band released their EP “Excited to Death”《兴奋到死的东西》and went on a Guangxi joint tour “The Dudan Meeting Event.” Their music and live performances have always exhibited a “bright taste” for fans.
Song’s like "Excited to Death"《兴奋到死的东西》, "Shades of Black"《五彩斑斓的黑》, and "Justice" 《正义》represent the band’s sound and message. Many of their fans that have been to their concerts already know the songs from the new EP. The song "The Princess" starts with a quote from Zhu Bajie (a well-known character from the Journey of the West). It reads: "Monkey Brother, why is there a smell?" The quote indicates that the song has its own unique “smell”.
“‘The Princess’ is one of the first songs we’ve ever had, and the fans who are familiar with us know that we have been constantly modifying this song into what is now the best version.”
Young Drug has three band members that grew up in a domestically violent environment and are dedicated to showing their opposition against domestic violence. "We clearly know what kind of people we don't want to be." Their single "At That Moment, I Chose to Fight” 《从那刻起我注定为此战斗》is about their experiences and their feelings on the topic.
“When you are faced with a lot of obstacles in your path and you meet someone who extends their hand to “help,” you obviously take their hand. However, the truth behind the hand of help is not always out of a good place and you can be trapped, “kidnapped” by their words of kindness. It is incredibly important to be firm in your goals, open your eyes, and reflect on who you should or should not be.”
In a short period of time, the band has been recognized for its positive style and impact on Beibu Bay. The name “Young Drug” recalls the nostalgia of a younger and brighter time. In turn, listeners can similarly reflect on their lives. They're often referred to as a “Treasured Band” by the people that know them.
“We are so glad to have the support of our fans and the feedback and interaction they give back to us. We wish you all are safe and peaceful during this pandemic and for bands to have great performances, especially ours!”
