Artist: Fake Gentle

Release Date: May 15, 2020

Fake Gentle is a two-person indie electronic band from Chengdu, China comprised of Li Jing (lead vocals, keyboard, bass, chorus, planning) and Wang Xiaoxue (lead vocals, guitar, drums, sampling). Their unique harmonies blend classical, pop, rock, and electronic music:

"Whether we are talking about the visual or auditory aspects of the album, the electronic and futuristic sense cannot be missed. The album creates a world separate from reality, taking the listener to an abstract and imaginary space. Furthermore, the music is supplemented with specially designed image and text concepts."

Instead of allowing rules to restrict their creativity, the duo chooses to generate innovative ideas. In their work, Fake Gentle strives to create indie electronic music that captures their female experience in China. As advocates for women’s independence and freedom, the duo hopes to break through the “shackles” of reality in the fight for gender equality:

"The concept of the album "Who's World" is the future of women, where we had the help of a well-known visual art label located in Chengdu to design the overall visuals of the album."

After their formation in 2011, Fake Gentle participated in the SIANBEAT Asian Beat Competition in 2012 and won runner-up in the Chinese mainland finals singing group. That same year, Li Jing (keyboard) and Wang Xiaoxue (guitarist) started the band, The Hormones. In 2014, the duo co-created their first rock album titled "Elephant" 《象》.

Since they were still producing original works for Fake Gentle during this time, the duo was able to publish their first EP, "Desert Island"《荒岛》by 2017. This EP leaned towards the stylings of popular music at the time and motivated them to leave The Hormones. They began to focus on writing music for Fake Gentle and subsequently released their 2019 album "Who's World" 《谁的世界》.

"'We Can Talk' is one of the songs in our album that represents Old School music. Within the intense retro drumming is a colorful melody that showcases elements of opera and chanting.

The song has a strong rhythm, but also simple and repeated lyrics that overlaps the two tracks of the chanting and melodic vocals. We personally think that the whole album leaves a very unique experience for the audience."

This album expresses their musical experiences in San Francisco and their perceptions of the world as women. It delineated separation between reality and dreams while still emphasizing their freedoms.

"In real life, a lot of people tend to close themselves off when faced by the complexities of the world while this song is supposed to help breakthrough these feelings."
