“Unsavable”, is from Heat Mark‘s latest album “Not Bad,” which was released in August 2020. This was the first album that the band had released in three years. The production of "Unsavable" was driven by the “independent core” of Heat Mark, which involves the presence of pure rock music with the minimalist arrangement of guitar and bass drum. The tempo of this song is static, and the structure is really simple. In this era of the music industry today, which is surrounded by complicated electronic sound, Heat Mark attempts to return to its original nature.
The vocal and lyricist Pianpian Liu talked about his writing process of “Unsavable” in an interview:
I wrote this song because one day When I was watching TV, I suddenly heard a song, and I found it hard to accept, it made me even wanna throw up! I never thought I'd get such a big reaction from hearing a bad song, and it was so profound that I decided to write it down. I thought I could integrate myself into the public aesthetic, but when I hear and see some music or behavior, I still can't control my feelings and even have physical discomfort. Haha, maybe it's my fault! Accepting something new may take some time... Nowadays when the old stuff is still wildly sought-after, the work from the people who claim to be talented is so ordinary. It's hard for me to understand, but it doesn't change anything, I have to accept reality. Maybe I shouldn’t have those thoughts, but I'm not being pretentious, it's truly unfortunate to be a real misfit, and I think I'm probably doomed.
Heat Mark is an indie band that originated from Beijing, it was founded by Pianpian Liu (lead singer) and Zhiwen Wang (vocal, guitarist) in 2013. Being low-key and independent makeup Heat Mark’s spirits and attitudes throughout the years. Wang Zhiwen's performance is really passionate and emotional, and his creation shows his control of melody and structure. Liu's aloof, casual voice often brings some distance to the listeners, but the lyrics' that penetrate the portrayal of life and mood are always resonant. Heat Mark's music is really catchy, yet refuses to follow the crowd is always what they have been doing.
